Futile lunge of a charcoal

Artist Statement

Ever since someone unearthed the Venus of Hohle Fels (dated between 30'000 and 40'000 years ago), it’s been clear to me that the upright chimp, by which I mean the mankind (or part of the populace anyway), has always had the need to express him or herself in a nonutilitarian manner that can be considered artistic. Of course, some will say (the other part of the populace) that The Venus was created as a fertility goddess or for some other specific purpose, but I assert that whether it was meant for subjective entertainment or for a wider audience is irrelevant, the act itself is important for the creator. An extension of thought, if you will. Well, to be fair, most of the times it’s a callous and violent act, committed with joyous abandon. That isn't to say it would be any less meaningful or important to me.

Futile lunge of a charcoal – wild stab in the dark

I just try to understand what's going on in this ever crazier world. I have a great appetite for understanding, yet I constantly get wrapped up in preconception and prejudice. I'm just as clueless as the next person.

I feel it's more honest if an artist uses his own experience world as a basis for his work but I constantly get angered by some inexplicable war, human rights violation or someone's personal blight, so I perhaps naively become so wrapped up in the matter that I can't let go until I've processed it through my work. Well, I guess it's much cheaper to make a drawing of it than to pay for a years of counseling.

I use different mediums because I get bored easily and as was established before, I like to dabble. Learning is an inspiration, understanding is a revelation. Quite literally.

On these pages you'll find some of my futile lunges and wild stabs in the dark. There's much more where these came from, so I might add some pictures in the near future.

Roam freely. I did.
